Kat Lund: Blog II

How have you grown as a teacher from this experience so far (skills, understanding, or knowledge gained) (lesson planning, classroom management, demonstrations, etc…)?

When I first started teaching I had no idea what I was doing. No one explained what I could do and couldn't do with the kids. How was i supposed to control them, would they just listen to me as me or would I need to be stern when talking. After a few weeks it definitely get easier, all the questions that I had got answered, in one way or another. Let me tell you, I learned a lot about how I needed to talk to kids, they can be rude, they can trick you or they can get way too close. So in sorts, for each kid it's different, I never really thought about that. I learned that I may have got the hang of things right now but I still have more to learn

What new understandings do you have about children/education/your role in the classroom?

I learned so much about the kids and how to treat them. There is a time to be nice and a time to be stern. I’ve been learning how to find the happy medium where they still like me but they know what role I play. I learned that I can't be too invested in certain kids’ lives otherwise kids feel left out even if they don't want to talk to me, they still get upset. Most importantly they have shown me that I can still be a friend along with a teacher, and that we can have a blast without getting out of control. Kids are our future.

What has made you happy about teaching this quarter? When I started this class I had no clue how to dance or even just let go and not care what people think.  They have brought out the best in me because they just want to see me try, even if I do make a complete fool of myself. I never thought I could have fun dancing with a bunch of kids, but I’ve been having a blast. Even going to class and having them full of joy and smiles, brings a smile to my face. They make going to class fun because they are always willing to try. That's what I like most, knowing that they enjoy coming to class and knowing they enjoy what I teach them.

What is something that you would like to work on improving by the end of the semester? I would love to change what the whole thing is about. Honestly there is only so much dancing but if it was a mix between dancing and games I feel that would be better. We've mixed it up every week between videos, dancing and games, and they seem to be enjoying it. I’d also like to change time management because we sometimes feel rushed or don't get through everything I'd like to get through. Other than that, I’m happy with how they are doing in the class and that they are enjoying it also, it makes for a enjoyable time.
