Crysta Bedard: Blog II

How have you grown as a teacher from this experience so far (skills, understanding, or knowledge gained) (lesson planning, classroom management, demonstrations, etc…)?

So far I have learned that I know more than I originally thought. When I first started I was worried since I hadn’t done lessons or teaching in a while. I have also learned important things such as if you want your students to be interested in the subject matter you have to find out something they are interested in first and relate your lesson to that.

What new understandings do you have about children/education/your role in the classroom?

Well I am teaching adults so I don’t have any new understandings about children, but I do have new understandings about my students. I had one student who was being particularly rowdy and using vulgar language. I stated that I would appreciate it if he would not use that language and he stopped. However, he was still very rowdy and causing distractions. Through some digging I found out he likes anime. I like anime as well so I engaged him in conversation about what shows he likes. Since then he has been much more well behaved and I haven’t had issues with him since.

What has made you happy about teaching this quarter?

Last class most of the students thanked me and my partner for taking the time to teach the class and said they enjoyed it, and that made my day. It’s gratifying to know I’m making a difference in someone’s day.

What is something that you would like to work on improving by the end of the semester?

I would like to improve on my ability to take charge. I feel I have improved in that area a little but I would like to continue to get better at it.
